Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask

Let’s file this one under: Items I tried not to like due to the price.

In the midwest, we suffer through notoriously humid summers. (Swampy at times seems a more fitting description.) Despite said humidity, in some strange turn of events, I have been struggling with chapped lips since early June’ish. I’ve been using Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 over the winter – and liking it – but even that was no longer getting the job done.

My search for perfect lip balm has been going strong since last fall. There was one that kept repeatedly surfacing on “best of” lists, but I had avoided it due to the cost –  Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask. Coming in at $26, this was a little spendy for my blood. (Now in all fairness, I was comparing it to standard lip balms that I had historically never spent more on than could be found in the change holder in my car.) However, when I applied lip gloss lately, it came with a “dry dead skin” finish – nobody wants to see that. Something drastic had to be done.

The stars aligned when that afternoon I received an email from Sephora offering a coupon. That was it, I bit the bullet and ordered it. Then I got a glass of water and sat on the front step for the next 48 hours waiting for the UPS truck to arrive. (Okay not literally, but there was definitely near constant checking of the front porch.)

The original formula is heralded as a cult classic, but I ultimately went with the Bit Agave Lip Mask in Champagne that is described as a “rose gold formula” featuring a hint of shimmer. I figured, with a little pigment, perhaps I could wear it in lieu of a lipgloss until things worked themselves out in the lip department.

Upon opening it, I was struck by how thick and rich the formula is. There is no risk of excess product coming out of the tube. The tube itself is similar to that of a toothpaste container-on steroids. I am not overly particular about packaging – short of functionality – but I was taken by the sleek, minimalist design.

Due to the consistency, it takes a few seconds and some rubbing or puckering before it smooths out. A tiny amount goes a very long way. (This was at least reassuring to the frugal part of me still struggling to come to terms with the price.)

The scent and taste are sweet and actually really pleasant. Once my lips absorbed the product, I really didn’t feel like I was wearing much at all. My lips felt immediately hydrated and dare I say plumped.

But you guys, the wear time!

I applied it in the morning and then sat down to work. 6 hours and as many glasses of water later – it was still intact! I ate lunch, and didn’t even need to immediately apply again afterwards. My lips still felt well moisturized.

In terms of the pigment and shimmer, it was far more subtle that I had hoped, but still a really pretty finish. It was a “my lips but better” finish. (Side note: my lips are relatively pigmented – if your lip coloring is faint, maybe do a quick lip line before applying to wear out?) I stick with a nude lip 99% of the time, so I am really happy with the color and finish.

Lest the SPF police weigh in, I would note that there is no SPF in this product. I generally break out the  Jack Black Intense Therapy Lip Balm SPF 25 if I’m going to be out in the sun.

In short, this is not comparable to any lip balm I have ever tried and frankly, has ruined average balms for me for life. I have been wearing it daily for 2 months and yet the container looks hardly used. Many reviewers use it as an overnight treatment as opposed to a daytime product. I use it then as well and my pillowcase shows no trace of the faint color. (The same cannot be said for recent self tanning products tested.) If you have been on the fence about the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask, I cannot recommend it enough. I apply it 1-2 times daily and then again before bed. At this rate of use, I fully expect it will last me several months. Whereas, I tend to blow through drugstore lip balm much more quickly due to the necessary repeated application and in some cases excess product escaping. I’m hoping this one lasts me until the Sephora Sale in November so that I can stock up at 20%!
