In August,Target rolled out the first of their new clothing lines, A New Day. I reserved judgement until such a time as I could try on a number of the pieces and inspect the quality first hand. A New Day offers a range of versatile basics and trendy, but wearable, statement pieces. Best of all, the entire line is reasonably priced seemingly impressive quality. Earlier this week I visited Target to sift through the line and try on several pieces. Prior to this release, I had been loving the Knox Rose line at Target, so I had high hopes for A New Day. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it surpassed my expectations!
Imagine the versatility of a long sleeve tee, combined with the coziness of your softest sweater and you get this Cozy Knit Long Sleeve Top. Dare I say, this is a must-have basic for fall and winter. The fabric is just amazing and there are several pieces in the line made of the same soft material. It can be worn on its own, under a cardigan or over a bralette or tissue-thin top. This will no doubt serve as a workhorse in any wardrobe. If you tend to run a bit warmer, check out the Cozy Knit Short Sleeve Top as an alternative. Both run true to size. (TTS)
While we are talking basics, I could not get over how soft this Fitted Long Sleeve Crew T-Shirt was! Target has always been known for affordable staples, but this fabric blows their previous offerings out of the water. Made of 58% Cotton, 39% Modal, 3% Spandex I couldn’t believe how smooth and almost silky it felt. The fit was perfect as well – it skims the body without being snug – and it’s available in 11 colors! Runs TTS.
For something with a little added visual interest to be worn on it’s own or under a cardigan, check out this Utility Top. Made of a jersey material, it lives up to the level of softness I am quickly coming to expect from this brand! It is a banded collar pullover, with cargo chest pocket flaps and a pleated back. The long sleeves can be rolled and buttoned to a 3/4 length in warmer weather. The fabric was lighter than the other options and layers well under cardigans and utility jackets alike.
Target really is a great destination if you want to dip your toe into some current trends without a big investment. I tend to invest in my classic pieces, and a budget a little less for those looks that may only be around for a few seasons. This season, those appear to be ruffles, statement sleeves and cold shoulder tops. (Because, they Just. Won’t. Go. Away.) Target (especially the A New Day line) offers a nod to these trends in a way that is very wearable for the 30+ women.
Let’s just get the cold shoulder issue out of the way for those who can’t get enough. (Not judging, it was fun at first. I just really, really want my shoulders covered now. Thank you.) The simplicity of this cold shoulder top is on point. Available in both gray and cherry, this is a good casual option aired with either medium wash jeans or jogger pants. However, if it were me, I might instead go with this Ruffle Any Day Pullover. It comes in black and green (buy the black) and is a bit more polished than the basic cold shoulder top. This would look really nice paired with wide-leg trousers and pointed toe shoes.
Onto the statement sleeves. (Confession: I have been completely sucked into this trend. I especially enjoy gesturing dramatically while my sleeves fly all over the place.) I have been fighting the urge to order all of the sweaters from Nordstrom, so I was excited to see this look available at such a great price point. Starting with a basic option, this bell sleeve top can be dressed up or down, is available in four colors and is subtle enough that it will not look dated after the trend begins to fade away. The neckline is just wide enough to flatter the collarbone, without requiring a special bra.
For a little more detailing, I tried on this Relaxed Bell Sleeve Any Day Pullover Sweater and loved it. This is a flowing top with fitted long sleeves that end in bell cuffs with fabric tie accents. The knit was impressive and I feel like it’s a good option for women (me) who do not like tops that are overly fitted in the stomach area.
My secret wardrobe weapon of choice has always been a second layer that is a bit of a statement piece. First of all, not to deviate too far off topic, but layering will always elevate your look. Yes, it is easy to throw on a long sleeve tee and jeans. However, when you top that with a utility jacket and patterned scarf, now you have an outfit. That extra 30 seconds spent in your closet will make you look more pulled together and feeling more confident throughout your day.
A New Day had a few items that jumped out at me as being great second layer options. If your layering repertoire is generally limited to cardigans – hang with me here. This Car Coat will add instant polish to a pair of leggings and a tunic. Add a pair of flats, loafers or booties and you will have a look that would make Olivia Pope proud! The quality and weight of this fabric makes it appear far more expensive than it is.
If you have been feeling the urge to try out the menswear or plaid trends that are so big this season, this Plaid Boyfriend Blazer checks both boxes. I’ve been on the hunt for the perfect blazer lately and was surprised to find that the fit is better than much higher priced options I’ve explored. Worn with a camisole (Maybe this one ? Or this one?) and dark denim or black leggings, this blazer is the perfect combination of cool and comfy! It’s just slouchy enough without swallowing you up (as is apparently the trend as of late…) If you’re feeling brave, a pair of distressed black jeans would look amazing! Perhaps these mid-rise raw edge jeans?
If you prefer something more classic – how about this Bi-Stretch Twill Blazer? It can easily be worn to work with trousers or a skirt. Or, if you’re off the clock, try it with a pair of bootcut dark wash jeans. (Bootcut – they’re baaaack.)
The line also features shoes, jewelry and accessories, but this is getting lengthy and I don’t want to overwhelm you. Be sure to click through to Target’s site and peruse some of the items I’ve mentioned. Their initial fall collection is on point and I’m excited to see what they release over the next few months!
Have you tried any of their pieces? What did you think? Is there anything I missed that you would recommend?
