Monthly Edit | September 2017

Each monthly favorites roundup features a collection of products (primarily makeup, skincare, hair and fashion) that I have been reaching for the most throughout the past month.

This is a funky time of year when it comes to choosing a foundation. The temperature is all over the place and remnants of summer sun have me not quite matching any color I currently own. To boot, I am struggling to find a new holy grail foundation since I no longer require the full-on matte finish of the Urban Decay All Nighter. So, foundation samples to the rescue. I have been trialing a few over the past few weeks. (Thanks to some gift with purchase deluxe samples and samples made for me in store at Sephora.) All of that to say, I am currently trying and loving Tarte Rainforest of the Sea Water Foundation. (Also sold at Sephora.) I’ve already ordered a full-sized bottle! It’s a light, water-based foundation that provides medium coverage and a semi-dewy finish. I was surprised at how well it wears on my oily skin. Like most Tarte products, it touts a shorter ingredient list than most and is suitable for sensitive skin.

My skin is definitely reacting to the temperature fluctuations, so I have been erring on the side of less base product and keeping the focus on skincare. On days I need to be sure that my makeup wears well for 10+ hours, I’ve been layering the Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer under my foundation. It pairs so beautifully with the Tarte foundation and it’s silicone free!

While it’s not new, I dug out my OG blush – Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush in Risque. I’ve been wearing it almost daily and can’t get enough of the natural coloring. If Risque isn’t the shade for you, try Exposed, it has a cult following for a reason! I’m in camp matte when it comes to blush. I have textured skin that I prefer not to showcase with shimmer or heaven forbid glitter – just, no.

For the last year or two, my eyeliner of choice had been a Clinique gel pot…that was discontinued. I am happy to report that after (a disturbing level of research generally reserved for life-saving operations) I decided on Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner. After a month or so of use, I am convinced that this product consistently remains at the top of Annual Product Rankings with good reason. The formula is light and creamy with great pigment. It never gets gloppy (professional term) and applies smoothly every time. The Black Ink (jet black) seems to be the standard color of choice, but I went with Espresso Ink (black brown) because I feel like I am reaching an age where jet black can be a little harsh on me. Espresso Ink is almost black, but definitely seems to soften things a bit. If you are of similar age and complexion, experiment by swapping out your go-to black for a deep brown. I think you might be pleasantly surprised with the results!

Let’s talk lip color. No, first let’s talk about how I can’t stop wearing lipgloss, but hate with the fire of a thousand suns when the wind blows my hair into my recently applied lipgloss…and proceeds to smear it across my face. The struggle is real people. Anyhow, you must have Revlon Super Lustrous Lipgloss in Super Natural in your life. (The product image color is wrong on Amazon, but they have the best price and of course – Prime Shipping! So go look at it here and then buy it from Amazon.) Ironically, I receive compliments on this drugstore superhero whenever I am visiting prestige makeup counters. Just sayin’.

My hair and I are going through a difficult patch in our relationship. I seem to be forever fluctuating between oily build-up and scalp dryness. Super sexy – I know. I received this Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt in my Sephora Play Box and it promptly addressed the issue. There is something deeply satisfying about a scrub on your scalp. It gets the job done in short order, but be sure to follow it up with a deep conditioner on the mid-shaft through ends of your hair. I’m struggling with the price point, but it also comes in a 2 oz size and a tiny bit goes a long way. I’m waiting out the upcoming Sephora Sale and may grab a full-size tub to get me through the winter.

As things have cooled off a bit and my outdoor time has come to an abrupt halt, I have been combining my moisturizer and sunscreen steps with Olay Regenerist Micro-Sculpting Cream Moisturizer SPF 30. (Not eligible for Prime, but a much lower price than I’m seeing elsewhere and shipping is still free!) It has a slew of anti-aging ingredients, dries down quickly and wears well under makeup.

It has made an appearance in previous posts, but I can’t help but mention my beloved Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask. This remains a staple and I carry it around the house with me all day. (Eventually, I will break down and buy another. Here again, waiting for the upcoming Sephora sale.) As chapped lip season is upon us, I am loving this more than ever and have foregone all other lip balms.

What are you loving now that fall is upon us? Leave me a comment below – I would love to hear your recommendations!
