Makeup preferences are obviously very objective. Skin type and coloring are going to impact your decision as are formula preferences. I have pulled together a list of cult classic products that retain their status for a reason. They have all been out for quite a while, have mass numbers of stellar reviews and I personally have tried them. If you are a makeup junkie, they may be old news. (Or, a reminder to pick up an old favorite!) But if you are looking to level up your makeup arsenal or just invest in a couple good quality items with a proven track record – this list is for you.
Smashbox Iconic Photo Finish Foundation Primer has been a go-to primer for makeup artists for years. The tiniest amount of this oil-free formula will allow your foundation to glide on after it has masked the appearance of pores and texture. A good primer can make or break the finish and longevity of your makeup. I see a lot of women skip this step and then complain that their makeup separates, clings to dry patches, gets absorbed by their skin, etc.
For those with drier skin, the Too Faced Hangover Replenishing Face Primer is a perfect solution. Even with more oily skin, I tend to use this on the exterior, drier areas of my face because of how moisturizing it is in the very best non-greasy way possible.
It Cosmetics Your Skin But Better CC Cream with SPF 50+ – This product is the perfect non-foundation. This is a CC cream formulated with skincare ingredients, an SPF of 50 and amazing full coverage finish. In other words, it is the trifecta. It applies well with a brush, sponge or even your fingers.
Too Faced Born This Way Foundation is an oil-free, medium-to-full coverage, natural-looking, radiant foundation. I love this product because it offers the skin-like finish of higher end foundations ($58+) without the price tag. Also, it contains hyaluronic acid to provide long-lasting, skin-balancing hydration for a smoother, more youthful appearance.
Versatile enough to use under the eye as well as to cover discoloration and blemishes, the Nars Radiant Creamy Concealer continues to be the top-selling concealer at Sephora. I don’t like to keep multiple concealers on hand, so this one is a workhorse in my makeup collection.
Laura Mercier Translucent Loose Setting Powder – Regardless of your skin type, you need to set your makeup if you expect it to last. This is the most finely milled powder. It is translucent so you won’t look cakey and won’t get flash-back in photos. It will last you forever because you only need to use a minuscule amount. Don’t think about it, just put it in your cart. All other powders may as well be discontinued.
This is the secret weapon that no one has told you about. It doesn’t matter if you prefer a no-makeup, makeup look, or you want your highlighter to be seen from a satellite. Urban Decay All Nighter Makeup Setting Spray will lock it in all. day. long. (It really is aptly named, and intended for those with more interesting night lives than me.)
I love the Tarte Tartelette In Bloom Clay Eyeshadow Palette. How much do I love it? I stopped a random woman shopping this week to tell her why she should buy it. (In my defense she was holding it in contemplation and I wanted to save her from a decision she would regret for the rest of her life.) I have other palettes but reach for this one 90% of the time. It is filled with gorgeous warm mattes and accented with three subtle metallics. If you are going to buy just one palette, let it be this.
I know, again with the primer. (Your final product is only going to be as good as the canvas people!) What makes the Urban Decay Eyeshadow Primer Potion in Eden so special, is that it is tinted to camouflage any discoloration on the lid and is a more opaque (but not heavy) formula that most. This will last you a lifetime because you only need to use the tiniest bit. If you are someone who avoids eye makeup because you struggle to blend it out, or maybe it skips, try this primer as a base and you’ll be amazed at the difference. PS – It HAS to be in Eden. They make several types, don’t get distracted by promises of anti-aging or pretty colors. You will be disappointed and you will want someone to blame. I tried to warn you.
I am not terribly loyal in the mascara department. I receive quite a few products through my Sephora Play Box, and rarely purchase a full-size mascara. But, if I were to do so it would be the Tarte Lights, Camera, Lashes 4-in-1 Mascara. However, if you want to make a foray into high-end mascara, I would actually recommend trying out the Sephora Favorites Lashstash. This is such a killer value. For $48 your getting seven deluxe-size mascaras—plus two full-size mascaras. (A $132 value.) This way you can try out a slew of different formulas and pick what works best for you! A deluxe size mascara will generally last about three months, which is perfect because it is best to toss mascara after three months.
Normally, my devotion to an eyeliner is much like that of a mascara (virtually non-existent) but I have become rather loyal to the Bobbi Brown Long-Wear Gel Eyeliner in recent months. It glides on easily, gives me a few seconds to work with it before it dries and doesn’t seem to transfer. Those are my requirements for an eyeliner and this one checks all of the boxes.
If you have been hanging around the blog for any period of time, you can probably guess where we are headed here. The Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush is a favorite of mine. I really enjoy the longevity and formula. Risque and Exposed are good neutral options for fair to medium skin tones but they have several colors in the range.
Complete transparency here: I haven’t purchased much in terms of prestige lip products. There are so many great drugstore options out there, it just hasn’t been where I have chosen to spend my budget. I have tried a handful that have come to me in Sephora Play Boxes or gifts with purchase, but that is about it.
I would definitely urge you to use this discount to invest in the Bite Beauty Agave Lip Mask (I love Champagne.) I have heralded my adoration for this product before and our love affair is still going strong. Lately, I have been wearing just a lip liner and this mask (balm).
I lean towards a balm, gloss or heavily moisturizing finish in my lip products. (Nothing matte – don’t get me started.) I was introduced to Buxom Full-On Lip Polish last year and plan to scoop up the 6 piece holiday kit for myself during the sale. If you want to test out a few luxury options, the Sephora Favorites Give Me More Lip gift set is an awesome deal. For some less spendy options, be sure to check out my holiday gift set recommendations. They have a few smaller sets that still pack a punch.
